Position Summary The Insulation Shop Mechanic performs a variety of tasks with hand tools involving working with flange shields and multiple types of insulation. Mechanics are required to follow specified safety policies and procedures.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills Key Roles & Responsibilities
This list is representative of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of a insulator mechanic in the insulation shop. An insulator mechanic must demonstrate the functional knowledge and ability required to perform tasks in these and related areas of responsibility.
- Flange Shields (Fabrication and installation)
- Install and remove
- Make new flange shields
- Boiler Insulation (Fabrication and installation)
- Measure and make lagging pads
- Install lagging pads
- Pipe Insulation
- Pipe Rubber/Sheet Rubber
- Install small pipe rubber jobs of 3/8 inch to 2 inches independently to include measuring and cutting
- Install large pipe rubber jobs up to 18-20 inches independently to include measuring and cutting
- Know the difference between straight and elbow pipes
- Pipe Calcium KAYLO
- Measure and saw the insulation (including to fit the pipe)
- Assemble and secure rubber
- Mix and apply insulation mud and cloth
- Pipe Fiber Glass Covering
- Knowledgeable with Fiber glass and FSK tape
- Measure and cut fiberglass p/c to fit elbows as well as straight pipe (1/2 inch to 12 inch)
- Cloth out to complete the product
- Hullboard and Beam Cover Insulation
- Insulation Fasteners/Stud (Layout and install)
- Layout a grid pattern
- Grind, shoot or stick fasteners
- Overhead and Bulkhead Insulation
- Measure material and prep space before installing insulation
- Knowledgeable with materials like: plane face hull boards (1&2 inch), acoustic hull board (1&2 inch), Fiber Glass hull board (1&2 inch) and Polymide foam (1&2 inch)
- Beam Cover Insulation
- Knowledgeable with T Beams and Angle Beams
- Knowledgeable with materials like: plane face hull boards (1&2 inch), acoustic hull board (1&2 inch), Fiber Glass hull board (1&2 inch) and Polymide foam (1&2 inch)
- Measure, cut and install insulation
- Shoot or stick studs and secure them
- Knowledgeable with fiber glass tape and smoothing
- Knowledgeable with lagging paste
- Block insulation on large pipe, boilers and machinery (turbines and generators)
- Machinery Insulation
- Knowledgeable with the following machines: Pumps (ex. Feed, still water), Force Draft Blowers, SSTG's (steam generators), Main Feed Pumps and Evaporators
- Knowledgeable of insulation temperatures
- Knowledgeable with the general insulation process
- Boiler Epoxy Resin - 2 Part
- Mix and apply a 2 part resin
- Fire prevention for boiler casing and burner front piping
- Taping Out of Insulation Sheet and Ducting
Other Requirements
- Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
- Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
- Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
- Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
- Must be able to wear applicable PPE(Hard hat, safety goggles, gloves, safety toe shoes, ear protection, Tyvek suits, and respirators)
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills Education Minimum: High School Diploma/GED
Relevant Experience Minimum: 3 years
Pay Information This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which will determine your wages.
