Position Description

Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Wellness and Health Promotion, the Acupuncturist provides safe and effective acupuncture treatments according to intake assessment, diagnosis, and client needs. The Acupuncturist maintains client confidentiality and a high degree of professionalism and is an integral part of the Center for Wellness and Health Promotion team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform initial intake assessment to collect medical histories and general health and life style information from patients.
  • Assess patients' general physical appearance; analyze physical findings and medical histories to make diagnoses according to Oriental medicine traditions.
  • During each appointment, demonstrate a high level of safety and caution related to the placement, manipulation, removal and disposal of needles.? Observe safety and caution in the storage of unused needles, TDP heat lamps, and any electric stimulation devices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competency in manual stimulation (tui na, shiatsu), acupuncture with electrical stimulation, and other adjunctive therapies within the scope of licensure.
  • If requested by department supervisor, answer basic questions from patients by phone or email.? Comply with privacy and security procedures associated with these communications.
  • Evaluate treatment outcomes and recommend new or altered treatments as necessary to further promote, restore, or maintain health.
  • Consider Western medical procedures in health assessment, health care team communication, and care referrals.
  • Interact with clients in a manner that encourages the patient?s comfort in expressing needs and concerns.
  • Set up all equipment for appointments. Check that appropriate materials are available. Restock and store equipment at the completion of appointments, ensuring that all materials are clean, safely housed, and locked when appropriate.
  • After each treatment, document presenting symptoms, treatment, and outcomes in SOAP note format. Including diagnostic code.
  • Communicate effectively with CWHP staff to maintain uniformity in procedures and consistency in the overall experience for each client.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of other programs and services offered by the CWHP and assist in referring clients back to the CWHP for additional information.
  • If requested, provide informational and educational sessions in regard to specific areas of Acupuncture. Participate in meetings and organizational discussions when appropriate.
  • Inform, discuss, and receive approval of any absences. Adhere to regulatory guidelines, departmental and unit specific policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Provide dependable and reliable service.
  • Maintain professional conduct and appearance. Maintain professional development and stay up-to-date in the field.

COMPLIANCE

  • Adheres to the expectations and professional responsibilities of the department.
  • Employs the standards, practices, and procedures of the department.
  • Completes and complies with HUHS training requirements including HIPAA Privacy and Security.
  • Reports non-compliance incidents to the supervisor, manager, and/or Compliance Officer.

PUNCTUALITY/ ATTENDANCE

  • Recognizes the importance of being punctual in meeting the operational demands of the department. Arrives ready to work at the start of shift.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master?s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
  • Minimum of 2 years? relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications continued:

  • Must hold and maintain a current Massachusetts state license
  • National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM)
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Enjoys working with people and is a team player
  • Basic computer knowledge

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, intermediate Excel skills

Certificates and Licenses

  • National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) Certification
  • Current Massachusetts acupuncture license

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting using near vision use for reading and computer use for extended periods of time
  • Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion

  • Work is performed in an office setting

  • Letter of good health from your personal health care provider.
  • TB skin test (within past 3 months) or, if known skin test positive, documentation of previous chest x-ray, information about any past treatment.
  • Documentation of immunity (positive antibody titers) for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Proof of appropriate past immunization for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Hepatitis B vaccine series ? required for staff with possible exposure to blood or blood borne pathogens.
  • A current Flu vaccine (this season) and Covid vaccines to include the Primary series and Bivalent Booster.

The required medical documentation/medical clearances can often be obtained by contacting your Pediatrician, PCP, medical provider. Titers, TB Skin testing can be performed by appointment at Occupational Health facilities.
